Tar and Gravel Roofs BUR Built Up Roofing Flat Roofing Retrofits with TPO and Elastomeric Roof Coatings

CanAm has several roofing solutions that will save you BIG money over the cost of re-roofing. It is no longer necessary to incur the huge costs associated to a complete roof replacement. As long as your roof is structurally sound CanAM can retrofit you with a new TPO or EPDM roof system for a fraction of the cost....

Thermoplastic polyolefin commonly known as TPO or  ethylene propylene diene monomer known as EPDM Roofing Retrofits

Roof retrofits or re-roofing with TPO or EPDM, are the fastest-growing segments of the commercial roofing industry, and CanAM works with world leading manufacturers and suppliers of these roofing materials.

CanAM TPO and EPDM membranes are available in sizes up to 12-feet wide and 200-feet long, reducing labour costs and making installations of this roof system so cost efficient. Adding to the efficiency are CanAM's use of  prefabricated accessories that drastically reduce the amount of time needed to flash rooftop penetrations.

Benefits of Mechanically fastened and fully adhered TPO and EPDM roofing systems include:
• Major cost savings over full roof replacement
• Customer-friendly, heat-weldable membrane
• Colors: white, gray, tan and black
• High wind uplift performance
• Hail and puncture resistance
• Top ply membrane thickness adds improved long-   term weatherability and durability
• Meets ENERGY STAR® guidelines in white
• Billions of square feet installed in North America

Typically as seen above these roofs are covered in varying thicknesses of lose gravel and must be cleaned in preparation for repairs and new TPO membrane.   Redundant roof protrusions are removed and holes roofed in prior to installation of insulation layer

After all repairs are made and wet insulation has been removed and replaced the new ISO insulation board with required R-Value is mechanically fastened.

In high wind regions or with higher roof lines additional RUSS strip may be required around the buildings perimeter.

Extra care is taken and corners are reinforced as required. Flashing detail is completed with Leister hand welders.

EPDM Roofing Systems

Durability, design versatility and installation ease are among the many reasons ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM) is amongst the most popular material for both new and reroof low-slope roofing applications. EPDM Roofing Systems are based on a high-performance synthetic rubber compound that provides outstanding weathering characteristics in climates worldwide. From office buildings and distribution warehouses to hospitals and schools, CanAM has an EPDM roofing solution that’s right for you.

Elastomeric Roof Coating

An amazing and environmentally positive alternative roofing process is an Elastomeric Roof Coating which costs about 50% of re-roofing but carries a 10 year roofing warranty and many benefits.

Flat roofing also known as Tar and Gravel or Built up roofing is commonly made up of a base of tar paper, covered with liquid tar, embedded gravel with a lose gravel covering. Repairs to Tar and Gravel roofing is very expensive and not always effective in stopping the leaks

Often this results in the suggestion by the roofing contractor to re-roof. Invariably, a complete tear-off and replacement is recommended. CanAM now offers an alternative to this very expensive old school approach that can save up 50% or more over replacement with the added environmental and cooling cost benefits.

Elastomeric roof coating benefits:Satisfaction Guaranteed

  • Substantial reduced cost over re-roof

  • Energy Star rating and Green Building rating

  • Reduction in cooling costs with up to 80% reflectivity

  • White Roofing option

  • Years of longevity given to the existing roof

  • Minimal disruption to the work environment during its application

  • Minimal waste going to landfill

  • Annual reduction in cooling costs as high as 22%

  • No toxic odours or vapours

  • Ease of future repairs

  • No increase in roof weight load

  • Reduced long term maintenance and roof repair costs

CanAM has developed a flat roofing system specifically for Tar and Gravel roof systems that will allow you to keep this roof for years to come.

The existing Tar and Gravel roofing material serves as the foundation for applying this roofing system. The final result (seen below) is an elastomeric roof membrane that is watertight in hot or cold climates and can save on energy and future repair and maintenance costs. A Tar and Gravel Elastomeric roofing membrane is easy to clean and re-coat for future longevity.

Tar & Gravel Roof Cleaning

Typically as seen above these roofs are covered in varying thicknesses of lose gravel and must be cleaned in preparation for repairs and coating.   CanAM has developed a process to quickly and effectively remove the rock and debris.

Tar & Gravel Roofing Repairs

Here an old repair has been found to be a cause for leaking.

The damaged area is repaired with hot liquid asphalt, roofing mastics and nylon mesh is embedded for added strength. This area is now repaired and ready for coating.

Here the first base coat is applied. The base coat has been applied and cured and the white top coat is being applied.

As you can see the special attention is given to ridges and cracks around roof extrusions. The finished roof is water tight and will reflect sunlight and reduce cooling costs for many years.
